Ultra focused niche market

August 28, 2009

Internet marketing and search engines best serve tightly-defined, ultra-focused, niche markets. How can you have competition if no-one offers what you do?

Best made axes

Best made axes

Consider ‘Best Made Axes’ – they make hand-made axes that are objects of art, items of fashion, collectibles; quality is expected, demanded and is not even news; they sell because they are cool, different and sexy (in a lumberjack kind of way) and price is of no consequence.

Visit their unique website site.

What makes your service / product different? Are you offering something that no-one can duplicate because it is uniquely you? Find and cultivate that uniqueness and then deliver it consistently; time and viral marketing will do the rest.

Permalinks shortlinks

August 24, 2009

Definition: Each webpage and blog post on the Internet has its own URL or address – see top of your browser. WordPress calls this address its Permalink and every one of your blog posts has its own URL – address – Permalink. When you load a blog you probably get the last 10 posts which means you are actually downloading 10 separate posts each via their own Permalink.

Usage: It is common usage for a post to have links (hyperlinks) taking visitors to other blog entries or websites. This enriches the experience for the reader.

If you want to link to a website or another post in your current post you use its Permalink which as you can see in the image below is long and descriptive. (Note that the edit button does allow you to edit it if necessary).

The Permalink is automatically generated from the blog title – this is how you get the Permalink from someone else’s blog – you click on that post’s title in your browser and it will load that post only; then you can cut-and-paste the post’s exact address from the browser.

If you click on the ‘Shortlink’ button you still get the Permalink to that exact post but the URL is a lot shorter (and not descriptive). The Shortlink of the blog post above is http://wp.me/pt2gi-6R. This can be a lot easier to work with despite it being more cryptic.

Be focused when writing for the Net

August 19, 2009

The Internet is only one way that you grow your business; if only 15% of your clients come from your blog, website, podcasts, videos then you are doing well because these clients arrive at zero cost.

The Internet is a big place and if you are going to be noticed you need to be micro focused on a niche market e.g. hoping to get to the top of the search engines on ‘property’ is unrealistic.

Become an expert and a resource in a very narrow field. This will make you stand out and bring in qualified quality clients e.g. ‘student accommodation in Bloemfontein’, ‘five-star game lodges in the Waterberg’ , ‘family holiday accommodation on the south coast’. Combine this expertise with being experience focused and project-based. In all things look for the story and some unique selling point.

As in all writing for the Internet, focus on keywords, using them repetatively and often.

Perseverance, keep moving

August 14, 2009

It has been some months for some of the delegates who attended the ‘Dead Men have White Collars’ seminar – just enough time for you to begin to get disheartened because nothing may have changed in your circumstances despite some months of hard work.

Malcolm Gladwell, at the Leadership Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa took time to point out that there is no such thing as an ‘overnight success’. Every successful person has put in 10 000 hours of hard work before success ‘fell from heaven’.

This is why we must follow our passion; it is the only thing that is going to get us through 10 000 of hard work with little reward, e.g. 10 years at 4 hours per day. Sadly western culture has diminished the value of hard work which is in direct contrast to eastern culture where it is the norm.

‘Dead Men have White Collars’ does not point in the direction of using Internet resources as a quick get-rich scheme. There is no short cut around consistency, passion and hard work.

Your diary calendar journal solution

August 6, 2009

Traditional diaries and calendars (both real and virtual) all suffer from the same problem i.e. they assume that you have one interest, one job, one project, one career and one focus; a linear structure.

The Journal - DavidRM Software

The Journal - DavidRM Software

The new world demands that we be
project based . . .
that we have short, medium and long term goals . . .
that we manage our lives holistically – a network structure i.e. a project management approach.

If you have found linear diaries a problem when attempting holistic life management give the software program called ‘The Journal’ a free 30 day trial – ($39.95 for a the full download if you like the system)

Here is a quick list of its advantages and features.

Entries can be sorted into categories and or topics meaning that your life can be made up of as many facets as you find practical and useful. The bonus is that each facet can be linked to other entries via a keyword system.

Categories.
You can create multiple categories for your entries as well as nested subcategories. A category can contain either dated or undated. Categories are useful for separate projects. Categories can have subcategories.

Topics.
If you’re familiar with tagging, then you already know how topics work. You can assign one or more topics (tags) to any entry. Then you can search entries by topic. For example, you could list all the entries you’ve made regarding health and fitness. There are 60 built-in topics, and you can create your own topics as well.

Tabbed interface.
The tabbed interface makes it easy to switch between different categories and subcategories with a single mouse click.

In addition the Journal assists with life critical tasks like . . .

  • Discover your life purpose.
  • Get a check-up on how you’re doing in 11 key areas of your life.
  • Identify your core values.
  • Set goals.
  • Balance your life to create alignment between your needs, abilities, desires, and purpose.
  • Assess your relationships.
  • Install a positive new habit. Overcome a bad habit.
